Machinists Union Shows Strong Support for Negotiators with 99% Vote In a tremendous show of solidarity, thousands of Machinists' Union members walked off the job today and filled Key Arena. Ninety-nine percent of those members voted YES to grant the Negotiating Committee strike sanction authority. The 99 percent includes members attending meetings in Seattle, Wichita, Portland and several out bases. The crowd, which was fired up and enthusiastic, sent Boeing a message It's Our Time This Time to make improvements in ALL areas of the contract. Literally, thousands were still waiting to enter as the meeting adjourned - determined to cast their ballot in support of Union negotiators. District 751 President Tom Wroblewski declared, "Our members showed they understand It's Our Time This Time by taking their own time to attend this very important meeting and grant Union negotiators strike sanction. Our members came despite management e-mails and intimidation in crew meetings to stay at work. Our members shut down airplane manufacturing at the biggest aerospace company in the world because without our members there are no Boeing airplanes. The 99% vote today sends a strong message It's Our Time This Time because we all know Boeing is all about numbers. In the past five years, Boeing after-tax profits exceeded $13 billion dollars - up over 828 percent, as a result of the hard work of our members. Airplane orders have also skyrocketed in the past five years - increasing by more than 560 percent and setting a record in 2007 with 1,413 orders. All this means Boeing is one of the most successful companies in the world and that It's Our Time this Time to make improvements in ALL areas of the contract. Our members have done their part to make this Company profitable; It's Our Time This Time for workers to get their fair share," added Wroblewski Union negotiators will continue to meet regularly until round-the-clock bargaining begins on August 22. Members will vote on an offer on
September 3. The current contract expires at 12:01 a.m. on Sept
4.
The vote today is a preliminary step in granting strike authorization that is required in the IAM Constitution to collect strike benefits in the event members reject the Company's last, best and final offer and vote to strike on September 3. A strike vote today is not an indication a strike is likely to occur. ![]() |
